There are a number of companies offering transfers and car hire services. We use Metin Oncul of Sunny Car hire in Kalkan.  Metin can provide transfers - £45 (2006 price) each way from Dalaman to Kalkan - and car hire. Contact Metin direct for mini bus rates, for bigger groups or car hire and mention Villa Akkaya so that you get preferential rates. If you wish to arrange to have a car for a few days during your stay it’s safer to pre-book this in the high season. Details of other firms providing transfers/car hire are provided on the Links page.  If you need help or advice with bookings please let us know.

You can also arrange to drive yourself from the airport should you wish – we can provide directions if needed.  If driving yourself there is a 2.5 Turkish Lira (YTL) charge for using the tunnel between Dalaman and Gocek and, depending on where your hire car is parked, you may need to pay to exit the car park.  Make sure you have the entry parking ticket before you set off.

Local taxis are available to take you up
to the villa - and with a phone call they will come and collect you to take you in to town - for about £2 each way.
They are of course also available for longer trips -
but you may find the dolmus cheaper and more fun.

Banking and Changing money
There are two banks in Kalkan and both have ATMs.  The post office in Kalkan also changes money as do other money-changers. We find it generally best to take sterling from the UK and change as required to Turkish Lira (YTL) locally – for two reasons. Firstly, the rate has (so far) always been better in Kalkan, and secondly you can often get a better deal by paying in sterling than in lira, especially on the markets.  Most shops prefer cash and do not take cheques or credit cards although you can usually pay by credit card at the Kalkan and other petrol stations and in the larger shops and restaurants.

Telephone - We do not have a telephone in the villa, but your mobile will work (with international access) there, automatically picking up the relevant local service.

There are several Internet cafes in Kalkan, giving quick, cheap and easy access to the internet.  The Turkish letters on the keyboard take a little getting used to but the free tea you may get makes up for it!

Visas, and at the Airport - EC residents (including each baby/child) need a visa to enter Turkey – obtainable on arrival at the airport at a cost of £10 in sterling.  The visa is valid for three months and multiple entries in that period.  You need to get your Visa before you go to passport control. Visitors from other countries should check their visa requirements. Also, to get a trolley for your bags, you will need a £1 or €1 coin.

Flights - are available from all parts of the UK to Dalaman, which is about 1.5 hours drive away from Kalkan.  Flights are also available to Antalya, three hours away or via Istanbul. See Links for some internet sites we use for flights. We can help further if required.

Distances - It is easy to land in the middle of nowhere in a strange country you do not know, so here is some idea of where Kalkan is vis-à-vis the area - (to the west) Dalaman airport - about 1.5 hours; Fethiye - about 1 hour; Xanthos and Patara beach - about 15 minutes: (to the east) Kas - about 40 minutes, Antalya, - about 3-3.5 hours.
